CONTENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

FAQ |
What is a content management system?
A CMS is a web application you run on your web server to help facilitate
creating a website. A good CMS should be flexible, unobtrusive and help
you to make a great site. It should provide you with tools to help the
layman keep track of content, while letting more experienced webmasters
handle look and feel. It should also provide tools to make repetitive
things less repetitive. Like for example, News entries.
CMS Made Simple tries to do all those things, as do them well.
Where do I get a CMS?
The CMS is not an off-the-shelf piece of software that you buy and install
on your computer (like many other web editing programs, e.g., FrontPage,
ClarisWorks or Dreamweaver). The CMS is accessed through a web browser
and can be used any place you have a connection to the Internet.
HTML scares me. Is the CMS right for me?
Absolutely. CMS users need no technical skills or graphic design ability
to publish their web sites. And, as a bonus, all content published with
the CMS uses the official college templates. You concentrate on the
content; the CMS takes care of the code.
I already have a web site. Can I use the CMS to edit it?
Eventually. If your web site is maintained with software you have on
your computer, you’ll have to convert it to the CMS, most likely
by a lot of cutting and pasting. Unfortunately, there is no easy way
to convert sites maintained by other software to the CMS. Contact webmaster
for details.
What are the benefits of using the CMS?
- Ease of use. You don’t have to be a technical wizard to create
your web site
- Instant gratification. Need to fix a typo? Add a new page? It can
be done in just minutes with the CMS
- No need to re-design. Once your site is maintained by the CMS, you’ll
never need to re-design it if the college changes its overall site
design -- this will happen automatically for you.
